How to Decide How Much Power You Will Need

When choosing your Portable Generator, you will need to remember some important points:

Each generator has a rated wattage.  This information can help you know the limits on how many appliances that can be run safely.   Small appliances can be run on a portable generator with about 3,000 watts.  When running only one appliance at a time, the generator can run a small a.c. unit of 5,000 BTUs or 1/2 hp pump.  Be sure and always read the manufacturer's recommendations for proper use and total capacity.  If the generator becomes overloaded then risk of damage to the appliances may occur.  Be cautious that some electrical devices have a starting wattage requirement.  They are larger than than the running watts.  Use the starting wattage requirments for the larger devices you are going to run and running watts for the other devices.  This will help you decide the minimum wattage you will need from a generator.
