Wind Generator

What To Consider When Buying A Wind Generator

First and foremost, wind is a natural occurrence.  You will need to consider the amount of energy you will need.  The amount of energy produced from the wind will vary on a daily basis.  There are portable wind generators available that would be great for  minimal amounts of energy.  To measure the amount of power of wind produced in an area is by class.  If you are in a low class area of wind you will need  another source of energy will need to be turned on like a fossil fuel based station. 

Types Of Wind Generators

Horizontal axis

Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) main rotor shaft and electrical generators are at the top of the tower, and pointed into the wind typically.  Wind vanes are almost obsolete these days.  Larger turbines generally use a wind sensor paired with a servo motor.  Gearboxes turn the slow rotation of the blades into a faster rotation which is more suitable for driving an electric generator.  Towers generally produce turbulence behind the turbine, so the turbine is usually pointed upwards of the tower.  The blades are made solid to prevent blades from being pushed into the tower by high winds.

Vertical Axis

The main rotor shaft is arranged vertically on VAWTs or vertical-axis wind turbines.  The advantages of this type of wind generator is that the turbines do not have to be pointed into the wind to be affective. They utilize winds from all directions.  These VAWTs are generally installed near the base of which they rest which provides an advantage to accessing the mechanical components.  Wind speed is slower at a lower altitude, so less wind energy is available.
